Tree Pruning
Crown Thinning – Individual branches are removed from a trees crown to reduce its density, increase light through the canopy and reduce windsail of the tree. Rubbing, crossing branches and deadwood are also removed from the crown to reduce future branch failure. It is important to use certified arborists for such work, as incorrect thinning can increase the likelihood of future branch failure.
Crown Raising – Removal of the lowest branches to raise the crown of the tree, usually carried out to increase the ground clearance for people, vehicles, property, light etc.
Crown Reduction and Reshaping – The overall reduction of the size of the crown by reshaping, reducing the height/spread of one or more portions of the crown by cutting back the tree’s outer branches. This is usually carried out to increase clearance from buildings, allowing more light to pass and to improve the trees health. Reduction pruning can also be used to reduce the mechanical stress on individual branches or the whole tree. We can advise on the correct methods to be used to maintain a particular species’ natural form and the extent or pruning that that particular species can withstand.
Pollarding– Removal of the whole crown of a tree, back to the main stem and/or primary branches, leaving just a stem/branch framework. This encourages vigorous and dense re-growth at the point of the original cuts. Once pollarding has taken place, a pruning cycle every 3-4 years should be undertaken, this will form a ‘knuckle’ at the point of pruning.

As storms become more frequent and severe, the risk of tree and branch failures has significantly increased, posing potential hazards to both property and safety.
